The Pattersons is the story of a wealthy and powerful family’s path to redemption—a path hewn from the bedrock of American history, and one with the power to energize an American Dream that, for many, seems out of reach.
Ellen Fletcher left an environmental law practice to marry Marshall Patterson, heir to an oil-and-gas exploration company rooted in the energy and optimism of the frontier. During what was supposed to be an idyllic summer at their north woods cottage in Wisconsin, the Pattersons and their two children are drawn into a maelstrom spawned by predatory corporations and blind ambition. From festive porch parties and languorous country club lunches to ancient rites in a forest clearing, the Pattersons come to realize the terrible cost of unfulfilled ambition. Guidance comes in the form of a native American shaman who carries the wisdom of his people into the twenty-first century.
Women in the throes of midlife transition will enjoy this action-packed adventure of a family that has reached a tipping point, and whose wealthy resort community faces environmental catastrophe in the form of hydraulic fracking. The story is one of transformation, both for the Patterson family and a culture that is losing touch with its founding myths.

THE PATTERSONS is a very good read - well done and worthwhile. Its weakness is that part of the plot is a very heavy-handed left-wing morality play - a tale of a mean oil company and a mean right-wing media company doing mean things to the environment and to Native Americans. But the novel is really about people's lives and their response to this situation. And this story is well told and peculiar enough to make for compelling reading. We meet the main characters, Marshall and Ellen Patterson, as they reflect in middle age on how their lives have turned out. The novel does a great job letting us see how they became the people they now are - how not just the chance events in their own lives, but also their family histories and other social forces shaped them. As they come to understand all this, they are able to begin to change.Product details

The Pattersons edition by Michael J Hightower Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved this book. You'll want to stay up at night to reach the end. Characters were well developed and descriptions set the scene well. It's the story of how we change over time, and getting back to our roots. I didn't love the characters, but I loved their story and it all "worked". I hope Hightower writes another book to tie up a few loose ends.
I loved this book! It appeals on many levels it is a story of wealth, mid-life awakening, women's rights, the morality of oil and gas exploration, dislocation of native Americans, prejudice, family dynamics, early Oklahoma history. And more! Great characters makes you want to read more about this family and their social milieu.
